Fans across Canada were stunned to learn of the death of 28-year old actress Rosine Chouinard-Chauveau. The Montreal Gazette reported on February 21 that the critically acclaimed actress had died from “an unspecified health problem” exacerbated by her prolonged wait to have surgery. Her surgery, like so many others in Canada, had been delayed due to the pandemic. Chouinard-Chauveau’s starred in the 2012 film, “Catimini,” which received five Jutra Award nominations. The popular actress had a promising career ahead of her. She leaves behind her parents, Quebec actors Normand Chouinard and Violette Chauveau, and a young son.
Dr. Liane Feldman, surgeon-in-chief at the McGill University Health Centre said Chouinard-Chauveau’s death “underlines the terrible cost of the COVID-19 crisis.” She continued, “We have over 5,000 patients on our surgery wait list. That’s increased very significantly from last year, and I’m sure it’s the same at every hospital in the province. We are told 140,000 surgeries have been delayed or postponed.”
